Cairo, an exotic city that dates back to over 10 centuries ago, is a renowned tourist destination in Northeastern Africa. Cairo’s tourist attractions are many and diverse, with over 15 million tourists flocking in this ancient city each year.  

While most tourists are allured by the city’s ancient history, the city has so much more to offer beyond the great pyramids. In this article, I have reviewed the top 5 must-visit destinations in Cairo. 

  1. The Great Pyramid of Giza

Also known as the Pyramid of Khufu or the Pyramid of Cheops, the Pyramid of Giza is the oldest and only standing wonder of the Ancient world. Every year, thousands of travelers come to witness this intriguing structure that dates back to over 4,500 years ago. The pyramid was built between 2580 and 2560 BC and measures approximately 756 x 481 feet. 

The structure  used over 5 million tons of milestones, and human power of 100,000 men. The pyramid is surrounded by a massive burial site, including two temples, a few smaller satellite pyramids, 2 large pyramids, the Great Sphinx to the southeast, small mastaba tombs for nobles, and large cemeteries to the east and west.  

  1. The Khan El-Khalili Market 

Khan El-Khalili is a massive market that dates back to 1383. If you want to taste the best of the Egyptian dishes, this is the place to be. Besides the food, the marketplace has more to offer. You’ll find vendors selling gold, spices, lamps, silver, and cooper products, among other goods. 

  1. The Al-Azhar park 

Initially opened in 2005, the Al-Azhar Park is a popular attraction to tourists as well as the locals. The park is located in the old city of Cairo and is considered as the 6th great public places in the world.  

The park features a 30-hectare lush garden with over 325 labelled varieties of plants.  At the apex, the park also offers a spectacular view of the Mohamed Ali Mosque and the Citadel of Cairo. Inside the park, you’ll enjoy the best of the Egyptian dishes in the eateries. 

  1. The Cairo Tower

Located at Sharia Hadayek Al Zuhreya Gezira, the Cairo tower is the 2nd most visited tourist spot in Cairo, after the Pyramid of Giza. For over a half-century now, the Cairo Tower is the tallest structure in Egypt, featuring a height of 187m. The architectural design is profoundly fascinating, and you’ll enjoy every bit of your time there. It was last renovated in 2009 and hosts a variety of restaurants. 

  1. The Nile River 

With a length of about 6,695 kilometers, the Nile River is the largest river in Africa, and perhaps the longest in the world. Per second, River Nile discharges an average of 3.1 million waters to the Mediterranean Sea. 

Thanks to the fertile songs along the river, farmers can grow crops. As well, you will be able to witness the incredible historical and archaeological sites of the Egyptian traditional village life.
